Dojo Kun # 5 – Restrain your physical aggression through spiritual attainment

When we begin our lives our outlooks and spirits are pure. As we progress through our lives we are met with various negative outcomes that can muddy our perspective and darken our souls. Your training focuses your mind and can settle the turmoil of emotions from everyday life to provide you clarity of thought.

Allowing fear, pride, anger, jealousy, and envy to impede your soul will cloud your judgement especially during battle. Train yourself to see things as they are without emotions twisting your views of reality.

In ancient Ryukyu there’s an old saying, “If pride takes over your mind, withdraw your hands. If hands are about to come out for fighting, withdraw your pride.” – Ryu-Te No Michi by Taika Seiyu Oyata (Part 3, page 33)
